How do I find the energy guzzlers in my home?

With the Sparky P1 dongle and Chargee app, you can easily find out which devices use the most energy in your home. Here’s how:

Check your live usage

Turn on high-energy devices and watch your live energy use at the same time. For example, while cooking, doing laundry, or making coffee.

Have solar panels? Remember, if you’re generating or feeding energy back into the grid, your net usage might look lower than usual.

Turn off circuit breakers

To find out which devices use the most energy, you can turn off all the circuit breakers in your fuse box. Then, turn them back on one by one and check which devices are on each circuit. This way, you can see the energy use for each device.

Monitor and reduce standby usage

Standby usage is the energy devices use even when they’re turned off or in standby mode. This includes chargers left in outlets, devices with standby buttons, and electronics always connected to the internet.

Even though each device might not use much energy on its own, the costs can add up if you have many devices using power all the time. You can check your standby power by looking at your usage when you’re away. Or look back at your usage during the night (midnight to 6 AM).

Reducing standby power helps lower your energy costs and use energy more efficiently.

Smart meters only measure total energy use and don’t show details about individual devices. Many devices use similar amounts of energy, and their use can vary, making it hard to pinpoint which device uses what. A more precise but costly option is to install smart plugs on each device.
