(Finland) How do I activate the P1 port (HAN port) of my digital meter to use Sparky?

Updated today

In Finland, households can activate the P1 port (also known as the HAN port) on their digital electricity meter to access real-time energy consumption data for smart energy management applications such as Chargee.

Activation Process

The P1 port is technically available in most modern smart meters but is disabled by default. As a consumer, you can request to have the port activated through your electricity distribution network operator (DSO). Since Finland has a large number of different network operators, the exact process may vary depending on your region.

General Steps

  1. Check your network operator: look at your electricity bill to find out which company is your local network operator.

  2. Contact customer service: ask if the P1/HAN port on your meter can be activated. This can usually be done by phone, by email, or via your operator’s online customer portal.

  3. Fill in the activation form: some companies, such as Vaasa Sähköverkko or Caruna, may require you to complete a digital activation form before the port can be opened.

  4. Wait for confirmation: the activation is done remotely and typically takes a few business days. You will receive a confirmation once the port is active.

Important Details

  • Cost: activating the port is usually free of charge, especially when it coincides with the installation of a new meter.

  • Automatic deactivation: when moving to a new home or transferring ownership, the port is often automatically deactivated. Contact your network operator to confirm this.

Using the Port After Activation

Once the port is active, you can install Sparky using the provided cables, following the installation steps in the Chargee app.
